Made it to my charity goal today! Finally cracked $3000 and the trip is a total success.
Thanks to all the donors listed to the right, postcards from the trip should have arrived as a thank you for your generosity and support.

Finish line
An easy to wrap up the trip to the coast. I slept in until 8am and was out he door by 9 from San bernardino. Its a straight shot west and all urban, so I only carried 2 water bottles and just stopped at gas stations to refill. Traffic wasn't so bad in the morning, and I made stops just to keep my legs fresh and to pace for a 6pm finish.
Once I got to downtown LA, the cool ocean breeze was comin in and made the riding easier. I rode sunset blvd all the way fromdowntown to the coast, the traffic there gets pretty heavy and drivers fly around the corners. I missed my turn for Santa Monica blvd so I stayed wig sunset to keep my bearings and not have to backtrack, another biker helped steer me the right way. The entire route was flat until you get up in the hills, so that was an unexpected obstacle to face late in he day.
My friends Doug and leslie were set to meet me at the sign for he pier, but I came in on the pacific coast highway and them under the pier on the beach trail, but friends Brett, Adam, and Michael met me and had diner and drinks over at the promenade.
I great and relaxin day to end the trip, and i can wait to take a real lazy vacation. I'm stayin in Santa Monica for the day and headin to the beach. Goon to take the train back to Michigan in a week or so, and hoping to meet fee

A great finishing day to the coast at Santa Monica and had friends meet me for dinner and drinks. Ready for sleep and a day at the brag, report to come tomorrow.

Out of the mountains
After 2 weeks, I'm finally down to the other side of the mountains. Rolling hills as I started out from Barstow, the big obstacle today was the wind in my face and some horrible pavement along the way, not to mention being exhausted from my night ride earlier. It's so hard rising on the rough gravelly roads, since you never get to coast an constantly have to work the pedals to keep your speed. The wind was constant all day, and u kept hoping it would shift once I got into the mountain passes.
The sum was out, but it only got into their 90s maybe, that seemed much more manageable compared to the last week. Once I got to the mountain pass, I got to jump on the highway and zip thru a 10 mile stretch and coming out to the urban sprawl of San bernardino. I stopped in the wigwam motel right on route 66 and resting up for the last Sunday ride.
The hotel manager says the 80 mile stretc to the brachial is a 4.5 he drive, so I should taper my time expectation. I'll be racing the traffic lights the entire distance, so I hope I get lucky with lights and traffic, either way I know the hills are behind me.

Desert dash
So, on my birthday I face the hardest day of the trip. A 169 mile trek thru the Mohave desert from needles to Barstow. Today had all the tough elements to face, the distance, lack of supplies, short sleep, and some extreme heat with no relief.
I started planning on Thursday night, grabbing all my water and food I would need overnight for the marathon ride. I prepared with 4X powerade bottles, 4X 20 oz waters, my 2 bike beater bottles, my 70oz camelbak, 4 clif bars, 4 power gels, combos, and a granola bar. It's a pretty desolate road and you need to be self sufficcient. Altogethr I have food and about 3 gallons of water to survive the rise.
James at my hotel gave me a quick scouting report for te highway. I'll be staying on I-40 for 155 miles, no turns and no sidetracking. I tried to break the route down into 4 quarters o 40 miles: needles to goffs, ludlow, newberry springs, Barstow. Any chance to trailing are as follows: a highway reststop at mile 40, ludlow's gas station at mile 100, an newberry springs at around 130. That's it, there are no other towns, no other stops.
I woke at midnight and was out the door at 12:45am. It's sill about 100 degrees but with no sun, it's as good as it gets. I'm racing to finish iAd soon as possible to avoid the sun, so any breaks are at a minimum. Little do I know that the majority of the first 3 hrs are uphill, a Roth way to start, and for the fort time I can't see the top in the dark.
I make it to the reststop at mile 40 at about 4am, I'm dead tired from running on 3 hrs sleep and the fact that all tits dark and traffi and all activity is at a stand still. I call my dad to see if a hotel is availably in ludlow,, I could try to split the ride up and be more efficient wig my time. There is a hotel, so I plan to stop at the midpoint and continue again once the sum comes down.
But then my caffiene pill kicks in. We're flying thru the desert and back on pace! Co am getting cold though, the temp dips down to around 60 degrees and I'm wet and windy, but moving well. I throw on my long sleeve shirt (fellow biker Oris told me to get a log speed to avoid the sun, "you never see cowboys wearing short sleeves"). His kept me warm from the wind and got me into Ludlow, mile 100 by 8am.
I finally get a chance to refill my bottles with 60 miles to go, as I find out my planned distances are off, but at least I'm prepared for the worsened circumstances. I take B10 minute break to refill and this is the longest break I tKe lalll ride. Glad I did, the sun is climbing and the temp is slowly rising.
With about 50 miles to go, newberry spring sits halfway to Barstow, a great next resting point. When I roll I. About 10am it's up above 90 and I am greeted by a boarded up gas station, thank god I did a full water refill. It's really weighs Dow the bike, but water is my gasoline out on the road. I have no chocice but to push thru. Any time I waste on the road is more time I have to spend in the sun and heat.
In 15 miles I find daggert, another town exit, another boarded up gas station. Ouch, n12 miles to go and temp above 100.
My back tiring is slowly losin air, I stop every 30 min to pimp it up, knowing that a flat would cost me 30 minutes and a lot of heartbreak. The tire holds as I enter Barstow finally around noon!
I find the first hotel and grab a room, inthe AC and shade for the afternoon. Call told , about 160 miles, straight shot with oy the luis stop to resupply. A rough at, and to me that is about he end of the ride. Once I lose this water weigh, my bike should fly thru he lag 2 sAys and 160 miles.
The last awkward momemt is the fact that to save space on the bike for water, I mailed home my unnecessary items, including my tenure and shorts that I wear after I'm off the bike. I grabbed some Chinese and pizza all the while walking around town in bike shorts and a white collar shirt. Classy.

So hot
Did I mention it's 111 degrees outside now. Getting an early early start in the morning to miss the sun.
Needles
Made it through the mountain pass to Needles and I'm finally in California! I got an early 5am start and made it thru the low valley before the sun peaked over the mountains. It was a slow downhill, that was interupted by some really bumpy pavement. I made it into oatman about 8:30 hopin for some breakfast. The oatman hotel was closed to my surprise, the owner has another hotel up in sturgis and he closes shop In oatman all of august. So I was bummed leaving oatman, but the burros that Han around town came strolling in as I took the road south out if town. A quick run on the highway and I got to needles around 12:30 and into my cool hotel for the day.
My hardest day of the ride is tomorrow and also my birthday, hope Incan riser the last $1000 to reach my 3000 goal.

Counting the days
The heat is back on now that I'm back down. Wind picked up to, but it was a straight shot all some winding mountain passes to get to kingman. A fun day hopefully on Thursday once I hit oatman; my favorite town on 66. Hopefully get there for breakfast and beat the heatto needles, AKA California. It's a old mining town up in the hills and the only road that goes in and out of town is old route 66. It's a Roller coaster road the turns around that cliffs and climbs and dips, so the morning will be flub with a fun descent later on.
San bernardino has me counting down the remaining hours like I'm nervous waiting for anfinal exam. 3 days/72 hours to go. (San bernardino is the end of the desert and the start of LA, my last day on Sunday should just be a victory lap cruising thru LA)

In n outta flagstaff
An up and down day thru flagstaff. I was covering about 110 miles and the first 40 were up the mountain. A rough climb and got to celebrate with a beer and lunch up on town. It was the high point if the trip, up around 7700 ft. Heading back down to selig an I had some great downhill sections. I wish my speedometer was working, but I was cruising without touching the pedals. 2 short days to go now until the long desert day. Hoping for some early days until then to finish before the sun heats up. One if the benefits of the mountains were the cooler temps. Now it's hot again and the cloud cover is gone, but the finish line is in sight. Saw my first signs for LA and they'll be counting down to Sunday night.
